Basic Carpentry Training Just Wrapped Up in Port Alberni, BC

Course Description

This is a 2-week training session.

AM sessions Workbook: Students will complete classroom learning – Critical Skills for the Construction Industry Workbook facilitated by a qualified Construction Carpenter.

Key topics covered:  First Impressions – Starting Your New Job, Building a Strong Relationship with Your Supervisor, Teamwork: Getting Along with Your Co-Workers, Diversity in the Workplace, Communication Skills I – Listening and Speaking, Communication Skills II – Reading and Writing, Managing Stress on the Job, Thinking Critically and Problem Solving, Resolving Conflict, Giving and Receiving Criticism, Sexual Harassment, and Drug and Alcohol Abuse on the Job.

PM sessions Hands-On: Students will learn the basic skills in residential construction framing and safety as they work on a small scale building project. This project can be done in a classroom, however, like any construction project it will be noisy for adjacent classrooms.

We would be building a mock building 4ft by 4ft by 3ft high. We would be learning layout, joisting and decking, wall building, sheathing, insulation, vapor barrier, drywall installation, mudding both corners and seams, siding and roofing. This building would be dismantled and removed at the end of the course.

Construction math: square footage, cubic yards, 3 4 5 rule, metric and imperial and the following:

  • Hand and power tools
  • Safety
  • Tool safety
  • metric
  • Wall and floor layout
  • Joisting
  • Exterior wall sheathing
  • Insulation and vapor barrier
  • Wall board (drywall)
  • Siding: concrete, vinyl and cedar
  • Soffits
  • Roofing: asphalt, cedar and metal

Students Supply:

  • Work boots, preferable steel toe
  • Comfortable clothing

Mosaic supplies take home individual products for students:

  • Carpenter’s pouch with basic tools: 16 to 20 oz hammer, drywall knife with a push lever and small blade, pencil, plastic tri square, tape measure (16 to 25 foot)
